Removing Coffee Stains from Your Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs are fantastic accessories to have in your home. Sadly, keeping them clean can be quite a chore, especially if they are in a high traffic area where food and drink spills can occur. Rugs in these areas can be high maintenance items due to the constant activity and entertaining of guests. An example of a common clean up need would be coffee stains. If you find a coffee stain on your rug don’t get frustrated and throw it away. With the proper cleaning techniques you should be able to remove it successfully. Here are the steps that you need to follow to give you the best chance of removing coffee stains from your Oriental rugs.

  • Once you have a spill, always try to get as much of the coffee off of the rug as possible. For this you can use a wet/dry vac to extract all the liquid or use a clean sponge or towel to absorb all that you can. Removing as much of the coffee as possible will prevent it from seeping deeper into the carpet fibers and thus making it even more difficult to remove.
  • The next step is to spray the area with clean water and blot from the outside going it with a clean cloth or sponge. You will see that some of the coffee is already transferring from the rug onto the cloth. This may not completely remove all of the stain but it helps make it easier to remove.
  • After blotting with water, take your pick of a cleaning solution to fully remove the remaining stain. Be careful to read the care guidelines for your rug to see which cleaning agents are compatible. If you prefer to go natural, using white vinegar is a great option. To use it, mix one teaspoon of white vinegar with a cup of water inside a spray bottle. Apply the solution to the stained area and then proceed to blot again.
  • Repeat the last step as necessary until all of the stain is gone. Once your rug is completely stain-free, rinse the area you cleaned with clean water to remove any vinegar or cleaning agent residue that may be left behind.

Cleaning coffee stains from your Oriental rug isn’t the worse chore you could ever do. Just follow these steps and you should be able to get rid of that coffee stain in no time.
